The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a series of interactive, hands-on, culturally sensitive workshops for adults and youth.
EFNEP groups meet in a variety of community-based or faith-based agencies and schools throughout New York City
EFNEP groups meet in 1½-hour weekly sessions over 10 weeks, while youth groups meet in 1-hour weekly sessions for 8 weeks. Workshops are delivered by trained paraprofessionals, many of whom are bilingual (English/Spanish and English/French-Creole). Workshops are available Monday - Thursday, during daytime or evening hours. Participants completing the workshop series receive a certificate from Cornell University Cooperative Extension.
EFENP learners will:
- Use USDA's MyPyramid to guide food decisions
- Plan menus and food shopping strategies
- Identify ways to save money and food resources
- Taste and prepare new recipes
- Discover ways to keep food safe to eat
- Participate in fun activities to get moving and stay fit
EFNEP groups meet in:
- Schools
- Head Start
- Daycare centers
- GED, ESL, and job-training sites
- Alternative schools
- A variety of community and faith-based agencies
