The New York City Department of Health classified the Rockaways as one of the heaviest communities in New York.

Cornell University Cooperative Extension NYC is collaborating with the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, The New York City Housing Authority and Healthfirst to "Lite'n Up Rockaways".

Lite'n Up Rockaways is a special initiative to help residents shed pounds and develop a better lifestyle through healthy eating and exercise. The kickoff event on February 10th marked the first weigh-in and registration of program participants, who vowed to return on every fourth Friday for 12 months to weigh in and show progress.

Cornell University Cooperative Extension will be conducting the Nutrition and Health Workshop series for program participants in support of their weight loss efforts.
