April 20th Presentation of RWJ Research Project on Positive Youth Development and Nutrition in Sports

April 25, 2006

On Thursday, April 20th from 1 - 2pm, Carol Parker-Duncanson and Jackie Davis-Manigaulte, Program Leaders for Nutrition & Health and Family & Youth Development, respectively, provided an overview of the "Positive Youth Development and Nutrition Education in Sports" research study that their program areas collaborated to conduct in the 2005 - 2006 program year with funding provided by the Robert Wood Johnson foundation. They presented to approximately twenty researchers at a research seminar sponsored by the Department of Public Health's Division of Prevention and Health Behavior.

The presentation highlighted findings that:

  1. Most youth and parents indicated that the youth "always" felt safe at their sports program. They felt as if they "always" fit in with their team, were able to make and keep friends, and received praise from their coach when they try and work hard.
  2. Most coach training curricula include limited information related to nutrition, hydration and the essentials for healthy youth development.
  3. Many directors and coaches were not familiar with the language of positive youth development.

Additional findings and details regarding the implications of the findings and recommendations can be found in the study's Executive Study.

The presentation generated a lively discussion and opened the door for potential future collaboration between Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Weill Cornell Medical College for addressing issues related to obesity prevention and other health issues.
