CUCE-NYC works closely with partners to support positive development of youth

The Kids Helping Kids Move Forward Project is funded by a grant from the New York State 4-H Foundation, which came as a direct result of the events of September 11th. The goal of this program is to provide teens in Westchester County and New York City with opportunities to engage in ongoing leadership and program development activities, and to build teen programming opportunities that reflect their unique perspectives, while offering opportunities for development of knowledge in new technologies, leadership, program development, community engagement, diversity and tolerance.

The Kids Helping Kids project provides opportunities for young people from New York City, Ithaca and suburban Westchester County to come together to discover not only what they have in common, but in what ways they can help each other build the future. The project promotes cross-county collaboration while exposing youth to a variety of shared experiences through a series of events. After more than 2 years of work together, the group continues to build upon their efforts, and accomplishments include:

  • A Youth Summit to celebrate diversity, to encourage tolerance, to build a team, and to share best practices
  • Participation in a National 4-H Youth Favorite Places website, an initiative designed to help introduce and teach youth about GIS/GPS to restore positive perspectives about their communities
  • Participation in peer education using GIS, thus broadening technology skills
