From geo-caching to web mapping, teens across the country are using Geographic Information Systems/Global Positioning System (GIS/GPS) technology in new and interesting ways.

Youth Favorite Places

New York City 4-H teens are participating in a National 4-H project called Youth Favorite Places, which is an activity that is designed to teach youth about GIS and GPS, as well as help them provide a service to their communities.

This is a new National 4-H Project in which, youth "map" their favorite places in their community. In addition to being introduced to new technology, youth also learn and share information about key natural resources, cultural and recreational sites in their communities. By participating in the project, youth contribute to a national database as a 4-H community service project. They also learn new skills and discover ways to apply their existing skills, by:

  • Using a GPS receiver
  • Using Digital Camera and photo editing
  • Using and entering information into a database
  • Reading maps
  • Conducting background research
  • Using technical writing
  • Collaborating with other organizations or agencies, and
  • Working in a team
