Enhanced Parenting Skills (EPS)

This program consists of ten, two hour workshops for parents who may be interested in learning and/or improving their skills for effectively communicating with their children. Parents are introduced to five skills that will assist them. The skills include: Encouragement, Can Do, Choices, Respecting Feelings and Self-Control. The curriculum is also designed to provide parents with a general understanding of some child development, cultural and environmental factors that influence their children's development and behavior.

The purpose of the program is to help parents become aware of their reactions to their children's behavior and how their actions impact on their children. The knowledge and applied skills that the parents will gain will enable them to work more effectively with their children, who in turn will learn appropriate behaviors conducive to healthy coexistence in their communities. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening decision making, respecting differences, and critical thinking.

Throughout this program parents are encouraged to think about and improve upon their parenting skills. The rationale for this is to get parents thinking about what they do, not just what we recommend to them. Thinking in this way is good practice for when they are outside of the sessions and need to make decisions. Role-playing and discussion will provide a hands-on approach for participants to explore alternative parenting strategies.

This workshop is offered through training of trainers and a limited number of on-site workshops.
