Program Goals
Using innovative, science-based and hands-on learning strategies, we enable diverse audiences to address local environmental needs through individual and community action. We are committed to working in partnership with agencies and organizations to plan, conduct and facilitate research and education that result in residents' increased awareness and skills, and enhancement of urban and community environments.
Current initiatives of the Urban Environment Program Area include:
- Experiential science education for educators and youth focused on community horticulture, environmental and related disciplines, involving cultural, intergenerational, and community action approaches
- Biodiversity and urban wildlife education that utilizes community gardens, parks and natural areas
- Urban forestry research and education that addresses the impact of trees on air pollutants, environmental quality and related health in urban areas
- Sustainable landscape and green technology design strategies as educational opportunities in impending developments
- Urban ecology education that provides educators and other professionals with training, educational resources and program delivery strategies
- Emerging projects that address environmental and education needs through experiential learning, internships, training and other professional development, as well as ecological research
